The San Antonio Spurs remind me of a very good machine. No matter what they add, or subtract, they always seem to find ways to win. This year they added some scary pieces; Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel. Despite adding these offensive-minded players, the defense has not suffered at all.
The Spurs are one of two teams (Memphis being the other) that are holding their opponents under 90 points a game. They are leading the league in opposing field goal percentage at 42.5%. It’s strange that other teams haven’t figured out that defense will win ballgames, or at least if it doesn’t win them, it will keep you in them and give you a shot at winning. This is how they Spurs do it and probably how they will continue to do it.
Offensively, Tony Parker is having an unbelievable season. Sure, he is only averaging a little over 19 points a game, but he is shooting above 54% from the field. For a point guard, that is unbelievable, especially these days. Of course, Tim Duncan is still Tim Duncan. They guy just does not make mistakes. It seems like he puts up 20 points and grabs 10 boards every game. Manu Ginobili is out right now, but I don’t expect that will phase the Spurs much. They will continue to find ways to win.
